Yeah, it's pretty much just friends only at this point as I have started rambling about life stuff.  I'm friendly, though, and will more than likely add you!

So I know it's my last year of funding and I really should be a bit more diligent with my research, but I had to take a Sims 3 break.  For those of you who know that Snape didn't actually die at the end of Deathly Hallows, I think I've found him.  Photographic Evidence of the Greasy Git's Recent Activities )

When JK Rowling Does Eventually Die...

  • May. 8th, 2009 at 11:27 PM

I hope that Harry Potter gets better protection than Star Trek did after Gene Roddenberry died because what I saw tonight was absolute garbage.  They completely killed Star Trek canon.  It was like bad fanfiction.  I'm really at a loss for words.  I can't believe how much everyone seemed to love it.  It lacked depth.  It just wasn't Star Trek.

I get that Paramont wants to make more money and try to expand the fan base, but what they don't seem to realize is that while more people might go watch their new Star Trek now, most of those people will abandon it when it's no longer the current fad.  Star Trek had a dedicated fan base.  Hell, Star Trek is where fanfic originated.  It has conventions.  People dress up.  They try to submerge themselves in the world.  That's a kind of love that shouldn't be shrugged off for this quarter's profits.

I'm pissed and hurt and just over all disappointed. *sigh*

Writer's Block: Wardrobe Malfunction

Broken zippers, split seams, straps that come untied at the most embarrassing moment possible—what's your most memorable experience with an unexpected wardrobe malfunction?

I once bought a skirt at a thrift store that looked as though it was still in perfect condition.  I proceeded to wear it to work.  On the way to work, I noticed that some of the stitches on one of the major seams were starting to come loose.  By the time I actually made it in, the skirt had pretty much come apart and I had to staple up one side of it to make it through the day.  For the record, the sensation of staples rubbing against your legs all day is not particularly pleasant.

Have you ever ruined the ending or given away plot developments in a book, movie, or tv show by telling someone who hasn't seen or read it what happens? Has anyone ever done this to you?

View 501 Answers

I accidentally spoiled myself with the final season of the Shield.  (I was trying to figure out what disc I needed to rent next and sort of got the ending to the series.)  I felt kind of stupid for this, and now I'm not really into watching it anymore (although I suppose that's for more reasons than spoilers.

What do you want done with your body after you die?

My ultimate dream is to be left out somewhere for animals to eat.  If not on land, then dumped into the ocean. I'm not overly partial to the idea of being buried and this way I'd still serve a purpose.  Plus it just kind of comforts me to know that some scavenger might get its calories from me... circle of life and all that. I also am in favor of this because I hate the funeral/ "death care" industry.  I feel that it's wrong to have try to get money out of people after they're dead, and I find enbalming to be both disgusting and unsettling. I don't know what will happen to me, but I know for damn sure that I'm not going to do anything like buy a burial plot before I die.  After I'm dead, I don't have to pay for anything.  And since I'm not having kids, it's not as though I'll be dumping that burden on them.

As the old saying goes, one person's trash is another person's treasure. What's the best thing—chairs, roller skates, old electronics—you've ever found that someone else had thrown away?

View 501 Answers

I don't know if this counts (as it's not free), but I do buy a lot of my clothes used, especially since moving to a place where people seem to have more disposable income (global recession or not) and tend to donate nice, new-looking, expensive (at least expensive for me) clothes to places like Goodwill.  (When you're a professional student, new clothes are like a mythical creature... you hear people talk about them, but you don't believe they really exist!) The best deal I've found?  This was years ago, but a pair of Dr. Martens for $3... you couldn't tell they'd been worn (although I suppose that this had to do with the fact that they actually had steel toes...)

I knew someone who once found a $200 espresso machine thrown out with the garbage.  He took it home, sanitized it, and used it for years.

Only 11.5 hours and 2008 will be gone, and I must say I'm a bit relieved.  It's been one of the most challenging years I've faced in quite some time, but I suppose that means I'm a bit stronger, wiser, etc. as a result.  Here's to hoping that 2009 is less trying!

Happy New Year, LJ people!

I Almost Poisoned My Dogs

In the off chance that someone reads this who has a dog that needs some kind of flea preventative, I am begging you to NOT under any circumstances use something called "Sentry Pro XFC," which is made by Sergeant's.  I bought this crap yesterday for my two dogs since their fleas were returning and I didn't want to wait until the vet opened on Monday (as I feared a severe infestation).  Anyway, I had to wash it off of them this morning as it gave one a chemical burn, made the other drool uncontrollably, and both of them threw up numerous times!!! I googled the treatment and as it turns out, lots of people have had similar experiences (with some of their dogs even having seizures).  I can't believe it's still being sold.

Today was quite traumatic for me as I was terrified I had poisoned my two dogs.  They got better, though, a few minutes after I washed the stuff off of them.  I don't know what I'm going to do about the fleas (daily baths?  I'm sure the dogs would love that), but at least the dogs are still alive!

Imagine a world without Star Trek. Is it a world you'd be very happy to live in, or a dark and terrible place?

View 501 Answers

Without Star Trek, I know I wouldn't have made it through my undergraduate career, or my MA.  DS9 is my favorite, followed by Voyager, the TNG, and Enterprise (which I learned to love this summer).  TOS is a bit, um, well I just don't go there.

My ipod.  I admit it.  It's a total luxury-type item, but I think I might sell my blood before I sell it.  It keeps me going in the gym.  It keeps me company on my hour-long commute.  I feel like a dork because of how attached I am to the damn thing!  Still, it's a pretty awesome piece of technology.

I have 22 days to read 58 books.  I am sooooooo freaking stressed!!! The qualifying exams are killing me.  I think I've forgotten everything that I've already read.  I'm going to have to do early voting because I have a 24-hr exam on election day.  I don't want to do this anymore.  I wish I just had a normal job and a normal life and I don't even know what I'll do if I actually manage to graduate.  Ok, that's my freak-out.  I'm going back to reading now.  One day I'll have a life again... although I'm not sure what I'll do with FREE TIME! (Free time, wtf is that?!)

Somewhere with socialized health care... so like the UK or France or Sweden... you know, places with good health care and a good climate.  (I realize I could get these things from Canada as well, but really I'd like to leave the continent before I die so there you have it.)

Are you prepared for a zombie outbreak, or are you just going to wing it?

View 500 Answers

I must admit that I haven't really done all that much to prepare for a zombie outbreak.  Personally, I am looking forward to the break in the monotony.  Furthermore, if it happens in the next three years I think that will mean that I won't have to finish my dissertation or pay back my student loans (as I will be busy hiding in a cave and living off the land).  So yeah, rock on zombies!

How do you feel about Pluto's recent demotion? Should it still be a planet?

View 500 Answers

Pluto totally should be a planet.  I feel that the scientists who downgraded Pluto's status are in fact stuck up elitists.  It's true that classifying Pluto as a planet could potentially open the door for more smaller bodies to also get planet status.  However, I say that our solar system is big enough to accomodate them.  Anyway, regardless of what the so called experts might say, Pluto is and always will be a planet to me.
